Sawgrass Eye Surgery’s Dr. Lessner in the Media

Dr. Cory M. Lessner has enjoyed great success as a LASIK surgeon and medical director for Sawgrass Eye Surgery, and his efforts have been recognized in many local and national publications.

United Press International – May 2006

Studies have shown sleeping in contacts could greatly increase risk for another type of keratitis infection, microbial keratitis.

These risks are why Cory M. Lessner, president and medical director of Millennium Eye Laser Centers in Sunrise, Fla., advocates laser vision correction — a set of technologies in which a laser reshapes the cornea.

“Whenever people talk about laser vision correction, they say, ‘Oh no, what about the danger.’ But I tell them people are sleeping in extended-wear lenses, putting them 18 times more at risk for corneal ulcers,” Lessner said.

From Estate Magazine – September 2006

For those who have considered LASIK eye surgery in the past, there is no time like the present to learn more about what Cory M. Lessner, M.D. describes as the “world’s best kept secret.”

Dr. Lessner is the owner and Medical Director of Millennium Laser Eye Centers in Sunrise. For years, he has shared the “secret” – how precise, painless and easy LASIK eye surgery is – with professionals whose job performance depends upon superior vision. He has treated personalities such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and former NFL coach and Fox TV News Anchor Jimmy Johnson, as well as news anchors like Dwight Lauderdale. As the official LASIK eye surgeon of the four major sports team in South Florida and now the Miami Hurricanes, he has also treated many professional athletes; Jeff Conine, Roberto Luongo, A.J. Burnett and Wade Smith to name a few. With the utmost confidence, they have chosen Dr. Lessner to give them the gift of sight.

From City and Shore – June/July 2008

Lessner attends players on and off of their respective playing fields, conducting preseason physicals, treating injuries suffered during games and performing LASIK surgeries. “Most Athletes will tell you that LASIK has enhanced their game,” he says. “Hockey players are able to pick the puck out of the air better, baseball players can the laces on the ball.”

From Ocean Drive – May 2008

When the Miami Dolphins score a touchdown or the Miami Heat hit a three-pointer, one proud fan might be a little brighter than the rest. Surgeon Cory M. Lessner, M.D., is the man entrusted with caring for the eyes of South Florida’s top professional athletes. “It’s an honor,” Lessner says of being the official LASIK surgeon to South Florida’s professional sports teams. “When they choose to say that it has helped their game, it’s a feeling I can’t really put into words.”

Basic LASIK Surgery FAQ’s

One of the main issues that face people who are eligible for LASIK surgery is the fact that most people don’t know much about LASIK surgery. At Sawgrass Eye Surgery, we want you to understand as much as possible so you can make an informed decision. Below are some frequently asked questions.

What goes on during LASIK surgery at Sawgrass Eye Surgery?

To start off, our experts will apply a numbing solution in drops on the eye, then a speculum is used to keep the eye lids open. These initial steps are basically to make it a little easier on you and the surgeon during the process. An opthamologist at Sawgrass Eye Surgery will then use a computer-guided laser to remove a layer of tissue off the cornea, which is the initial step to LASIK surgery. Remember, no needles are used in LASIK surgery at Sawgrass Eye Surgery, which is definitely one of the major benefits to the procedure itself. We then use a microkeratome that lifts up a layer of the corneal tissue, and then we use a laser to sculpt the tissue on the corneal bed. Then, from there we simply put the flap gently back in place without using a single suture.

Do I need LASIK surgery?

Here are few things that might mean you need LASIK surgery.

-Contact lenses for you are uncomfortable and inconvenient.

-Wearing glasses makes you feel weak and dependent.

-You’re athletic, but glasses and contacts hinder your ability to perform at your best.

-You don’t like to worry, and having to keep track of glasses and contacts is annoying.

-You don’t like the way you look in glasses.

-Glasses hold you back in your career.

-Your eyes feel discomfort when wearing contacts or glasses.

-You want to have better vision – plain and simple.

Am I nearsighted or farsighted?

You are nearsighted, or have Myopia, if you can see objects close to you, but far away objects are blurry. You’re farsighted if objects far away are clear, and close objects are blurry.

Can LASIK surgery fix nearsighted vision?

LASIK surgery has the ability to improve or completely fix nearsighted vision.

Can LASIK surgery fix farsighted vision?

LASIK surgery has the ability to improve or completely fix farsighted vision.

How long does LASIK surgery take at Sawgrass Eye Surgery?

The actual procedure takes under a minute, and total time in the laser suite amounts to about 20 minutes. In other words, it’s a life-changing procedure that takes about as long as watching a TV Show.

What is refractive surgery, and what forms of it are available?

Refractive surgery basically includes a collection of procedures that improve the conditions of the eye caused by errors in the refraction, or interpretation of light by the eye. Procedures include:

Laser assisted in-situ keratotomy (LASIK)

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)

Radial keratotomy and astigmatic keratotomy (RK/AK)

Laser Thermal Keratoplasty (LTK)

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)

About Us

Introduced into the U.S. early in the 1990s, Lasik eye surgery’s precision and results continually get better. You are in good hands at Sawgrass Eye Surgery, because we havehighly-trained, experienced doctors who use the most recent, up-to-date laser-guided equipment to precisely remold the tissue in the cornea of your eye. Their job is increasing the eye’s ability to focus light onto the retina, and the result of that treatment is that you will see a lot better. Patients choose lasik surgery to achieve relief from several conditions, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism. It usually involves a simple 5-minute procedure in our surgery center. Your doctor will set the computer to your personal eye prescription. It is a painless surgery, and you will be awake throughout the procedure. What makes the biggest impression on a Lasik patient? When you ask, they are often shocked that their vision is so much better in just a few minutes. Many no longer need either glasses or contact lenses, and that is a great relief to them. Some will even tell you they see better without glasses than they ever did with them. Plus, there’s a big sense of freedom in knowing you don’t need to remember to take your glasses … or remember where you last set them down. And they love the thought that they’ll never have to buy another pair of glasses or contact lenses ever again. Not everyone is a candidate for Lasik. The surgeons at Sawgrass Eye Surgery will never take a risk with any patient’s eyesight. Our job isn’t done until you are completely healed, so we carefully evaluate your immune system before performing the procedure. It’s important that glaucoma or chronic dry eye or cataracts be treated successfully before Lasik surgery. And while we can successfully treat most applicants, certain eye prescriptions fall outside the limits we set and indicate greater chance of a bad result. So we must decline those cases. After the surgery, we’ll have you sit down in the office for a few quiet minutes. You will need to arrange to have someone who can take you home. It’s best to spend the rest of the day at home and give your eyes a rest. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to take another day or two off from work. We advise no strenuous exercise for several days, so that the healing process can be successfully completed. With your prescription in hand, please call 1-888-93-LASIK. We’ll be able to let you know whether your eyes are a good match for Lasik surgery. You can then schedule a complete evaluation, so you can make your own Lasik decision.
